So what’s new?
The last 12 months have seen many exciting new product developments in Costa Rica – too many to mention here – so we have chosen to focus on our ‘Top 5’ of the newer destinations for relaxation. These cater perfectly for clients looking to avoid a more traditional resort stay for some well-earned relaxation at the end of a busy adventure around Costa Rica.
A chic coastal retreat of just 15 luxurious suites and bungalows (some with private plunge pools) offering a ‘best of both’ location for your time on the coast. Here you can explore the buzzy surf town of Santa Teresa but you also have a pristine stretch of beach just steps from the hotel. Nantipa’s restaurant, Manzu, is also located right on the beach – an amazing spot to sip a cocktail while you watch the sun set.
This 45-room hotel is the latest addition to the well-heeled beach community of Las Catalinas (a small, car-free town which was purpose-built as an ecologically-sustainable place to live on the coast). A variety of small hotels, villas, bars and restaurants can be found here, as well as walking and cycling trails into the surrounding forests. Santarena itself comprises a variety of light, modern guest rooms spread across 3 floors of a colonial-style house in the heart of the town. The hotel represents great value for money in the region, easy access to amenities – and the panoramic views from rooftop terrace and pool are something special!
Kasiiya’s luxurious tented suites bring the concept of glamping to another level in Costa Rica. Designed from the very outset to have zero impact on the surrounding forest, the suites strike the balance of complete harmony with nature and ultimate creature comforts for guests. Sustainably-sourced woods furnish the suites and form the elevated walkways which connect guest accommodation to the breath-taking deck area. Here you will find a fine-dining restaurant, bar, sun terrace and yoga area. As well as yoga & wellness options, Kasiiya soon plans to add a programme of more active pursuits to its offering. These will include tree climbing, nature hikes, kayaking and paddle-boarding in the wonderful setting of the Papagayo gulf.
The Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica used to have less choice in the way of luxury boutique beach hotels compared to the Northern and Central Pacific coastlines. This has been changing in recent years however, and Aguas Claras is one of the latest delightful additions. The hotel is run by an artist and her daughter, and their creative vision is evident throughout the project. Set around lush, tropical gardens are a variety of one and two-bedroom tasteful, stand-alone ‘casas’ with their own wooden terraces, as well 6 ‘Sweets’ (light & airy guest rooms set in the Plantation-style main house). In between exploring the nearby national parks and beaches, guests can relax by the pool or take a yoga class at the hotel’s own wellness centre.
Though not on the beach, our final recommendation certainly still provides ample opportunity for relaxation and indulgence in pristine natural surroundings. Perched on a mountainside with sweeping views of the surrounding forest and valley, the location of Origins (close to the Tenorio Volcano and National Park) is just one of the many special aspects of a visit here. Much of your time here will be spent simply enjoying the natural attractions immediately surrounding the lodge; nature walks, quiet contemplation by the lagoon, horse riding or a night tour in the forest to look for wildlife. Yoga and spa treatments are available for those looking to take things a little easier – and a relaxing soak in your private open-air hot tub is a must!
