Talking Stick Marketing are proud to present La Casona at Matetic Vineyards, an elegant rural retreat set in the idyllic vineyards of Chile’s lesser-visited Rosario Valley.
As one of the country’s finest and most innovative wine producers, Matetic Vineyards already win plenty of accolades in the wine community. However the superb position and levels of comfort on offer at their vineyard hotel, La Casona, are not always on everyone’s radar when planning a busy itinerary around Chile. So what is it exactly that makes La Casona so special?
Despite being just a 50-minute drive from Santiago’s international airport, you really do feel a world-away from the hustle and bustle of the Chile’s capital city. Arriving in the estate gives the feeling of entering an exclusive oasis, with hummingbirds darting in and out of the trees in La Casona’s exquisitely planted gardens, and the sight of the vineyards as an ever-present backdrop. Yet having such complete tranquillity so close to Santiago really does make La Casona an ideal place to begin or end a trip to Chile. The vibrant coastal city of Valparaiso is also a handy 45-minute drive away, so can easily be included as a day trip or the next logical stop on your itinerary.
Accommodation & facilities
La Casona’s 10 guest rooms are situated in the restored colonial main house and are furnished in a rustic elegance to reflect that era. All are spacious and feature supremely comfortable beds. Rear doors of the guest rooms open out on to a wraparound terrace which faces gardens brimming with flowers on one side, and the sloping vineyards on the other. The main house also features a welcoming guest lounge with fireplace and pool table, whilst a short stroll through the gardens leads you to El Equilibrio restaurant, and in another secluded area, the swimming pool with shaded day-beds and loungers with a back-drop of rolling vines.
Having at least one free morning or afternoon at La Casona is the absolute minimum we would recommend to enjoy the tranquillity of the place, and to slow the pace of a busy touring itinerary. However it is well worth considering a longer stay as there are a number of optional excursions that can be arranged from the hotel when you arrive, designed to showcase the picturesque surroundings of the Rosario Valley. In addition to regular wine tours, La Casona also has a team of expert guides who can lead you on a variety of trails – either on foot, by bike or on horse-back – through some of the most picturesque areas of the 9000 hectare valley.
It would be impossible not to mention a visit to Matetic without also giving a nod to the fantastic wines and tours on offer here! Even those with just a passing interest in wine will find it difficult not to admire what the Matetic family have achieved. Whilst organic wine production is long-established in Chile, it was combining this with the concept of bio-dynamic wine production that the family pioneered in the wider San Antonio region. Combining this with the already privileged growing conditions in this area of Chile has resulted in, quite simply, superb and multi-award-winning wines. A tour of the impressive ‘bodega’ – and of course some tastings – are included in all visits to La Casona!
